Karibi so nenadoma postali zanimivi zaradi procesov »globalizacije« in kreolizacije ter zaradi dolgotrajne zgodovinske povezanosti karibske regije s proizvajanjem novih potrošniških dobrin, predvsem poživil za množične zahodne trge. Še več, sodobna družboslovna misel »piratizira« koncepte, ki so nastali na Karibih in v »drugih Amerikah«. Med njimi je koncept kreolizacije in z njim tesno povezan koncept mestizacije.
Ičo Vidmar je sociolog kulture. Poučuje sociologijo popularne godbe na oddelku za sociologijo Filozofske fakultete v Ljubljani. Je glasbeni kritik in publicist. Objavil je številne članke o sodobni kulturi in glasbi. Od konca osemdesetih let vodi redno oddajo na Radiu Študent, posvečeno jazzu, bluesu, improvizirani godbi in afriškim glasbam.
