V Ženevi je potekala druga konferenca o boju proti rasizmu, diskriminaciji in netoleranci. Še pred začetkom je odpovedalo sodelovanje osem držav; Avstralija, Izrael, Italija, Kanada, Nemčija, Nizozemska, Poljska in ZDA. Kasneje se je tem pridružila še Češka. To so od 192 članic ZN edine države, ki niso podpisale sklepne deklaracije.
Najbolj kontraverzni deli so bili že pred konferenco umaknjeni, retorika usklajena, zloščena in benigna. V njej ni omenjen Izrael niti želja islamskih držav po omejevanju svobode govora kot zaščiti religij pred kritiko. Deklaracija poziva k zaščiti ranljivih skupin, od Romov do okuženih z virusom HIV. Holokavst ne sme biti nikoli pozabljen. Konferenca je bila bolj zanimiva zaradi tega, kar ni bilo povedano, kot to, kar je bilo.
Vsebinsko naj bi nadaljevala delo prve konference, ki je potekala v J. Afriki leta 2001. Sklepna deklaracija te je v končnem besedilu omenjala vprašanje Palestine in pravic avtohtonega prebivalstva. Podpisale so jo vse države, z izjemo ZDA in Izraela. Predstavniki teh dveh držav so zasedanje takrat protestno zapustili, deklaracijo pa označili kot antisemitsko in rasistično.
V Švici je imel otvoritveni govor iranski predsednik Mahmud Ahmadinedžad, ki je kmalu povzročil protestni odhod evropskih delegatov.
Ker se je švicarski predsednik uradno sestal z iranskim, je Izrael odpoklical svojega ambasadorja v tej državi. Premier Netanjahu je celotno dogajanje v Ženevi označil za festival sovraštva. Namestnik premiera Šalom pa je dejal, da hoče Iran z dejanji posnemati nacistično Nemčijo.
Bolj kot vprašanje Palestine so za globalni jug pomembne, za zahod pa mučne teme kolonijalne dediščine, genocida in razlastitev avtohtonih ljudstev, trgovine s sužnji in neenakopravnosti v mednarodnih političnih in ekonomskih odnosih.
OTOPLITEV AMERIK
Končalo se je srečanje Organizacije ameriških držav. Združenje ima 34 članic, Kuba je bila kmalu po revoluciji izključena. Vse članice z izjemo ZDA podpirajo njeno ponovno vključitev. Kot znak dobre volje so ZDA tik pred konferenco zrahljale del sankcij. Kubanska emigracija bo tako lahko obiskovala sorodstvo na otoku, pošiljala denar, odprli pa bodo tudi del komunikacijskih povezav. Predstavniki Latinske Amerike od Obame pričakujejo več kot kozmetične spremembe, predvsem pa nevmešavanje v notranje zadeve, prenehanje diktata ZDA in omilitev ali celo odpravo 47 let trajajočih sankcij proti Kubi. Latinska Amerika noče biti več dvorišče ZDA.
Obama bo vsekakor uspešnejši od svojega predhodnika, ki so ga na lanskem srečanju pričakale masovne demonstracije in zavrnitev prostotrgovinskega sporazuma FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas), ki bi pokrival prostor od Ognjene zemlje do Aljaske. V Washingtonu so ga pilili celo desetletje. Dosedanje “sproščanje” ekonomskega prostora, privatizacija in ostale politike prostega trga so Latinsko Ameriko opustošile. Če je povprečen zaslužek v regiji od začetka 60ih do konca 70ih narastel za 82%, je v obdobju vladavine prostotržne ideologije od leta 1980 do 2000 zrastel le za 9%. Če bi plače v Braziliji in Mehiki rasle s tempom iz 60ih, bi danes že dosegle evropske standarde. Če bo hotel predsednik Obama narediti preboj v odnosih s celino, bo moral poslušati tudi nepriljubjene glasove Chaveza in Moralesa, ki naslavljata prav jezo prebivalstva nad posledicami takšnih politik.
PRAGMATIČNA PRAVICA
CIA je na dveh osumljenih teroristih uporabila mučenje z utapljanjem kar 266krat, na Kalidu Šeik Mohamedu kar 183krat, na Abu Zubajdi 83krat. Dokumenti Ministrstva za pravosodje postavljajo na laž prejšnje trditve, da je mučenje Zubajde trajalo le 35 sekund.
CIA je leta 2002 zahtevala pravno mnenje o legalnosti takšnega zasliševanja, Condoleezza Rice kot svetovalka za državno varnost ga je odobrila, kasneje so sledila stališča ministrstva za pravosodje, ki tehnike utapljanja ne uvršča med mučenje.
Nova administracija je sicer takšno “zasliševanje” takoj prepovedala, manj odločna je pri kazenskem pregonu odgovornih. Ker se v Španiji začenja postopek proti 6im članom bivše administracije, je šef kabineta, Rahm Israel Emanuel, izdal sporočilo, da bodo ZDA ščitile agente CIE in druge državne uslužbence pred katerimikoli tujimi ali mednarodnimi sodišči.
Posebni poročevalec Združenih narodov opozarja predsednika Obamo in administracijo, da so ZDA podpisnice konvencije proti mučenju, zato je neukrepanje države proti mučiteljem kršenje mednarodnega prava. Odvetniki za človekove pravice obtožujejo Obamo, da z neukrepanjem spodbuja prihodnje zlorabe in kaže svetu dvojnost ameriških standardov.
UGRABLJENI PIRAT
Edini somalijski pirat, ki je preživel herojsko reševalno akcijo mornariških tjulnov, je prepeljan v New York, kjer čaka na začetek sojenja. Sodnik je odločil, da mu bodo sodili kot odraslemu, čeprav starši pravijo, da je star le 15 let. Na sodišču je bil prestrašen in objokan. Sodni postopek bo odprt za javnost.
