V četrtek je v naš kino (v Ljubljani Kinoklub Vič) prišel en zadnjih letošnjih oskarjevcev, film Bralec po romanu Der Vorleser nemškega pisatelja in pravnika Bernardha Schlinka. Od nagrajencev čakamo še Revnega milijonarja, če pa bomo na velikem platnu videli tudi nominirance The Wrestler, Rachel Getting Married, The Visitor, Frozen River …, pa bomo še videli. O Bralcu, predvsem o zgodbi sem se pogovarjal z Robertom L. Tuvo, ki je napisal Kinotožje 055 o filmu in Kate Winslet. (Opozorilo: intervju je poln kvarnikov, ki razkrivajo razplete.)
Si tudi bral knjigo?
Sem, ja, ampak zdaj, preden sem videl film. Ob prevodu pred osmimi leti je šla mimo mene, sem pa zdaj tudi pregledal arhiv časopisa Delo in našel med drugim intervju z avtorjem, ki nas je takrat obiskal, in sem videl, da smo knjigo lepo sprejeli. Avtorja so gostili tudi v Ameriki, bil je pri Oprah, in knjiga je šla na vrh bestsellerjev časnika New York Times. Baje ni bila še nikoli prej kaka originalno nemška knjiga na 1. mestu.
Koliko se razlikujeta knjiga in film?
Zelo malo, zgodba je ista, film ji verodostojno sledi, mnogo kadrov je narejenih po opisih v besedilu, drugačno je junakovo poslednje dejanje, kar pa nima velike teže. Nekaj dogodkov ni v filmu. Razlike drugje so drobne, v razlagah, knjiga mi je kaj razjasnila, kjer me je film pustil v megli.
Na primer kje?
Lep primer je zadnje srečanje med malim, kot ga kliče Hana, in njo. V filmu je on takrat zadržan in hladen, ko jo obišče v zaporu, teden dni pred njenim izpustom. Usedeta se za mizo in se po dolgih letih pogledata iz oči v oči. Gleda žensko, ki ga je pri 15-ih sprejela vase in ga gostila več mesecev, več mesecev sta se ljubila, podajala na izlete, kar je njega za zmeraj zaznamovalo. Zdaj v zaporu položi ona svojo roko na njegovo, pa jo on kmalu umakne in konča obisk. Hana se potem kmalu obesi v svoji celici. Pa si človek reče, joj, mali bi jo takrat lahko objel, morda bi Hana rabila samo en objem, samo kanček sočutja, pa si ne bi vzela življenja.
Vendar nadzornica zapora razloži, da Hana ni pripravila kovčka in ni nameravala ven.
To je res, vendar se vprašaš, ali bi spakirala, bi se veselila izhoda, če bi mali pokazal več ljubezni? Mislim, da je tu film nejasen. V knjigi nadzornica pove še nekaj. Hana je prebila v zaporu 18 let. Po desetih ji začne mali pošiljati kasete s svojimi branji. Najprej ji pošlje tudi kasetofon. In njegov glas in spomini na razmerje ter sploh ljubezen do zgodb — vzbudijo v Hani željo, da bi se le naučila brati in pisati, da bi postala bolj zrela, samostojna. In se nauči, malemu zdaj tudi piše sporočilca, kaj ji naj še prebere. Veliko bolj pomembno pa je, da odkrije zaporniško knjižnico, iz katere si sposoja vse bolj zahtevna čtiva. Naposled naročajo zanjo posebne knjige in Hana začne takrat sistematično študirati vojno zgodovino in gradivo o holokavstu. A po 16-ih letih v zaporu se je Hana zapustila, pove nadzornica, do takrat pa je bila disciplinirana in motivirana. Zato mislim, da se je Hana po študiju ustavila za zidom razumevanja. Spoznala je grozljivost in neopravičljivost holokavsta. Pa poglej, kam jo je pripeljalo darilo malega: prek veselega učenja do bridkega konca. A ni to skrajno grenka ilustracija ideje, da so neumni bolj srečni od pametnih oziroma čemur rečemo v angleščini “ignorance is a bliss”?
Razlog za samomor je torej v filmu drug?
Ne nujno, a knjiga je tu nedvoumna. Spomni pa se filmskega trenutka med njunim zadnjim pogovorom, ko jo vpraša, kaj misli zdaj o svoji vlogi med vojno — služenju v koncentracijskem taborišču in izvršitvi okrutnega požiga z jetniki polne cerkve. Ona odvrne samo, “da ni pomembno, kaj zdaj čuti, ni pomembno, kaj misli. Mrtvi ostajajo mrtvi.” A ni s to nerazlago razložila, da se zaveda razsežnosti holokavsta in da je edina primerna kazen pridružitev žrtvam? Knjiga je tu nedvoumna, k tem zaključku napelje na več mestih in mali je do nje v knjigi ob obisku ljubezniv. Nato jo celo pokliče po telefonu in ji da vedeti, da jo ima navsezadnje rad in da je do neke mere izpolnila njegovo življenje, kar je res. Kakršenkoli njegov odnos do nje se mi skratka ne zdi bistven vzrok Haninega samomora.
Zakaj pa ji ni pomagal že leta prej, med procesom?
Misliš, da bi javno razkrinkal njeno nepismenost in vplival na izid sojenja? To bi bilo grobo, s tem bi prizadel njeno dostojanstvo, Hano pa je mali imel rad. Najprej je bila to telesna navezanost, zaljubljenost, ki pa je prerasla v ljubezen, ki jo predstavlja strastno snemanje kaset. Ne, mali se ni mogel javno vmešati. Lahko bi jo obiskal v zaporu in jo vprašal, zakaj ne prizna nepismenosti, kar bi vsaj razkrinkalo zaroto sosojenk in bolj enakomerno porazdelilo kazen. Vendar sem prepričan, da ne bi nič dosegel. Hana je bila odločena, da svoje sramote ne razkrije niti za ceno dosmrtne ječe. Mali je bil takrat še zelo mlad, ne bi ga poslušala.
Metafora za kaj je Hanina nepismenost?
Nepismenost je nezrelost. Opismenjevanje je korakanje k zrelosti. Nezrelo je bilo tudi nemško ljudstvo. A seveda ne zato, ker ne bi znalo brati ali pisati. Temveč zato, ker je sprejelo Hitlerja in ker to razmerje ni bilo izsiljeno, ampak je temeljilo na simpatiji. Ni domiselno kar povezati in reči, da je od poznavanja knjižnih klasikov odvisno, da veš, kaj je prav in kaj ne. Med Hanino nepismenostjo in njenim zločinom ni drugega kot skupni imenovalec nezrelosti — seveda do trenutka ironičnega preobrata v zaporu, ko začne pismena Hana spoznavati zapisano grozo holokavsta, čemur se potem pokloni z lastnim življenjem. Nemcem lahko očitamo, da so Hitlerju sledil in da ga niso spregledali. Nepismenih nam je žal, da ostajajo v temi, in jim lahko očitamo, recimo, lenobo, če seveda imajo možnost za opismevanje, ki pa je v razvitem svetu najbrž povsod navzoča.
Predlagaš našim bralcem ogled filma?
Ja, meni je bil všeč. Če ga imamo samo za film o holokavstu, je plitev. Ampak holokavst je v resnici zgodba v ozadju, senca holokavsta določa čas in prostor, Hana je sodelovala v holokavstu, mali ga že poskuša razumeti kot Nemec povojne generacije. Glavna zgodba je druga, filmu bi si upal reči celo mladinski, ker gre za film o odraščanju. Zgodba predloge pa je torej tudi zanimivo simbolno domišljena.

wrestlerja baje v sloveniji sploh ne bo, ker naj bi, oskarjevki nominaciji navkljub, bil za obcinstvo premalo (komercialno, seveda) zanimiv.
drugace pa tako-tako film, me je pustil precej hladnega, verjetno ravno zaradi megle, o kateri pravis, da ti jo je pomagala razjasniti knjiga.

Jaz pa se sploh ‘ne upam’ it gledat filma. :o)
Ker sem za knjigo total okol padla, pa je redko kateri film tako dober ali celo boljši (z redkimi izjemami, na misel mi pride zdajle edino Fight club, kjer sta izvrstna tako knjiga kot film).
Si ga pa jasno že ogledam, nenazadnje da ‘primerjam’ in tud zarad obeh glavnih igralcev, ki sta mi oba zlo všeč.
